Bogart, originally called Osceola, a Creek Seminole Indian, found on the Norther side of the border, was founded in 1869. In 1892, the town name was changed to Bogart in honor of a respected local railroad agent, after learning another city in Georgia was named Osceola. Bogart was once a part of the Franklin county, then was moved to Jackson County, and now a major chunk of it sits in Oconee county, while a small part of Bogart sits in Clarke County. Bogart, saw new settlers during the land lottery in 1820. In 1890’s when the train from Athens to Atlanta was built, we saw the population rate growing rapidly.
In 1950, the city of Bogart was officially incorporated. The city had a bank, a boarding house, a mercantile store, a railroad depot, a drug store, three cotton gins, blacksmith shop, post office, school, grist mills, and churches.
Today, the city of Bogart has initiated numerous aggressive projects for growth. It is slowly positioning itself towards growth by working on downtown swers, Bogart's Sports & Recreation Complex, and streetscapes. There are a few major events that are held every year in Bogart, where the entire community comes together. It is a great way to include the local community and make them more involved in city matters.
